Vexations: Revisited

A study in repetition, shadow, and the erasure of the self.

This immersive installation reimagines Eric Satie’s seminal work through the lens of physical and sonic endurance. At its core, the piece centers on the relentless repetition of a short, atonal musical theme and its two variations, performed 840 times without reprieve.

The performance is housed within a translucent, latex-shrouded cube, from which only the tail of a grand piano emerges. Illuminated from within, the structure becomes a glowing monolith that obscures the performer’s identity, reducing them to a shifting silhouette against the latex membrane.

By stripping away the persona of the pianist, the installation fosters a profound anonymity, shifting the spectator’s focus from the virtuoso to the raw, hypnotic weight of the composition.

Lasting between 18 and 24 hours, the work demands a transcendental level of stamina, turning the act of listening into a shared trial of immersion and time.
